It was for his own good, anyway. Cruel, yes. Extreme, certainly.
But left to his own devices, Scott would cheat on any woman he became involved with. What kind of life is that? Joyce inquired. What would he become? All Scott had were his looks. Little education, and less drive. Without Joyceâs guidance, heâd be a drifter all his life. Iâm saving him from himself. Heâll thank me someday.
Joyce idled the Porsche into the firmâs underground lot, then strode, Bali heels clicking, to the elevator. Of course, keeping a man locked in your bedroom presents some legal problems. But why worry? The windows were Lexan set into steel frames, the doors were all locked, and the great waterfront house stood so remote he could yell till his face turned blue and no one would hear him.
âGood morning, Ms. Lipnick,â Dee and Marianne greeted in unison when Joyce entered the front office.
âGood morning, girls.â She repressed the urge to frown at Dee, whose large breasts threatened to erupt from her blouse. If she ever has a child, Joyce postulated, itâll overdose on milk. âDonât forget those Delany ârogs, Dee. I want them out today.â
âYes, Ms. Lipnick.â
âAnd those JAX instructionsâtoday.â
âYes, Ms. Lipnick.â
Blond ditz. Thinks she can steal away any man with those big boobs. In her office, Joyce contemplated her own breasts in the mirror. They looked fine nowâthe $5,500 implant job had taken care of the sag. And as for her dreaded cellulite, good old Dr. Liposuction had made short work of it. Scott being so handsome, Joyce felt the maintenance of her own appearance was an obligation. Youâre fifty-one now, Joyce, and youâre not getting any younger. Soon would be time for another lift, or a chemical peel. Thank God for plastic surgeons.
But the two fresh young girls outside inhibited her. She pressed her intercom. âMarianne, come into my office please.â
âYes, Ms. Lipnick?â said the receptionist a moment later.
âCome in please, and close the door.â Joyce stood up, mildly befuddled. âThis may sound silly, Marianne, but Iâd like your opinion about something. Your honest opinion.â
âSure.â
âAm Iâ¦â The question drifted. âDo you thinkâ¦â
âWhat is it, Ms. Lipnick?â
âWhat I mean is, do you think Iâm pretty?â
The young receptionist fidgeted at the question, âWell, of course, Ms. Lipnick. Youâre a very attractive woman. In fact, I heard some of the associates talking the other day, and they were saying how they couldnât understand why a woman so attractive wasnât married.â
Joyce brimmed. âAh, well. Thank you, Marianne. Itâs very nice that you related that to me. But please donât tell anyone I asked.â
âOf course not, Ms. Lipnick.â
Marianne left. Joyce reseated herself and thought, There, see? Nothing to be paranoid about⦠Nevertheless, she turned on the bug.
âDee! Youâll never guess what the Ice-Bitch just asked.â Joyceâs jaw set. Oh, so itâs the Ice-Bitch is it? âShe asked me if I thought she was pretty!â
Dee chirped laughter. âWhat did you say?â
âIâm not stupid, I told her she was very attractive.â Marianne chirped a bit of her own laughter.
